Decription

This route extends from Arundel to Amberley via the South Downs Way passing by South Stoke. A beautiful walk along the river with a moderate climb to the top of the Downs (600 meters) with some stunning views.
START THE WALK : At Castle Car Park behind Arundel Museum on the River Footpath.

Black Rabbit Pub

Once you reach the Black Rabbit Pub following the river path you need to walk in front of the pub heading to their rear parking. The path continues at the end of the rear parking area.

South Stoke Bridge
Cross the River Arun at the bridge at South Stoke. Once over the bridge take the footpath on your left.

Once you cross the river Arun on the South Stoke Bridge take Footpath on the left. Follow the river which will be on your left which will eventually veer to your right and into the woods. Continue on the Footpath.

At the end of the woods you will arrive at the Ghurka Bridge which you cross and continue straight on.

After crossing the Gurkha Bridge
After crossing the Gurkha Bridge go through the gate and follow the path straight up the hill. At the top of the hill turn right.

After crossing the field. Take the path on your right which runs parallel to the road heading up the hill.

Footpath joins with the road on your left going up the hill at this point. Join the road and continue going up the hill and stay on the road until you reach the gate that crosses the road which is just after the farm buildings that you will see on your right near the top of the hill.

After passing the gate you wiill arrive at a fork in the road. take the Restricted Byway (sign posted) which is effectively a road on your left continuing up the hill.

At this junction continue straight on on the Restricted Byway continuing up the hill and stay on this path until it dead ends into a T junction with another Restricted Byway.

At this T Junction take the Restricted Byway (sign posted) which is effectively a road on your left and continue going up the hill. Stay on this path all the way until the next junction.

At this junction turn left onto the Restricted Byway (sign posted) that continues to run up the hill and is more of a footpath rather than the "road" you were just on.

At this junction you will see a footpath on your left heading down the hill. Stay to your right and continue on the footpath following the fence on your right which continues up the hill.

At this junction you will arrive on the South Downs Way (Sign Posted). Turn left onto the South Downs Way and follow the chalk path heading down the hill towards Amberley Village..

At this junction stay on the South Downs Way (sign posted) which is the chalk path on your right which follows the fence heading down the hill.

Footpath dead ends into High Titten Road. When you reach the road turn right and stay on High Titten Road which curves to the left and heads down hill towards Amberley. This is still the South Downs Way.

Just before getting to the main road you will see the South Downs Way sign posted on your right. Turn right onto the South Downs Way which is the footpath on your right and which runs parallel to the main road.

Crossing the B2139
Follow the path across the B2139. Once you cross this main road turn right continuing to follow the South Downs Way (signposted).

At this junction Turn Left on the South Downs Way which is a farm road and continue straight on the South Downs Way following the signs.

Cross the River Arun
Still on the South Downs Way. Cross the River Arun and stay on the South Downs Way (sign posted) until you reach a vehicle road.

Houghton Lane junction
At this junction the South Downs Way which you are on crosses Houghton Lane. Turn left off the South Downs Way onto Houghton Lane and follow the road up the hill to Houghton Village to the main road the B2139.

B2139 Crossing
Houghton Lane ends at the B2139. Once you reach the B2139 you will see South Lane to your right on the other side of the B2139. Cross the B2139 onto South Lane and follow South Lane down the hill going by a number of country homes.

South Lane dead ends into a Public Bridle Path (sign posted) which joins and then follows the river Arun. Join the path following the river which will be on your lefthand side. Stay on this path until you reach the entrance into Arundel Park.

Entrance into Arundel Park
As you follow the footpath with the river on your left you will eventually see a flint wall on your right. On the other side of this wall is Arundel Park. Eventually you will see an Iron Gate in the Flint Wall on your right which is the entrance to Arundel Park. Go through this gate and once through the gate turn immediately left and follow the footpath up the hill to the top which is sign posted.

At the top of the hill you will arrive at a stile. Go over the stile and continue straight on into the field, heading towards the trees at the very top of the hill on your left. Once you get to the trees continue on the path keeping the trees on your left.

Follow the footpath running the top of the hill and go towards the clump of trees on your right where there is another stile to go over. Once over continue straight on the path heading down the hill.

At this junction take the path on your right the runs up the hill.

At this stile. As soon as you go over. Turn immediately right onto the path (earthen steps) that climb up through the trees leading to Hiorns Tower which you will see as soon as you leave the trees.

Follow Path that runs across the field. Hiorns Tower will be on your right. Follow the path (mowed grass) across the field and this will lead you out of Arundel Park.

Join the "road" which is the exit out of Arundel Park. Go out the gates, pass the car park and follow the road down to London Road. You are back in Arundel.

At this junction turn left onto the London Road and follow this past the Cathedral on your right. Continue straight on until you reach Arundel Castle. This is the top of the High Street.

Once you reach Arundel Castle Gate. Turn right onto Arundel High Street (staying on the Left Hand side of the road) and go all the way down the hill until you reach Mill Road which is the last road on your left just before going over the bridge over the river Arun.
