Judges Double the Number of Prizes in View of the Quality of Children’s ‘Terrific Artwork’

Arundel Town Council – Press Release

‘Terrific Artwork’

Over 200 Christmas cards designed by Arundel’s primary school pupils carpeted the floor of the
stately Atherley Chamber in Arundel Town Hall this week, as judging took place for the competition
organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Arundel Town Council as part of ‘Arundel at
Christmas’. The competition was judged by Sharon Blaikie, Chair of the Arundel Chamber of
Commerce and Arundel Mayor, Tony Hunt.

The standard was so high that the judging process took twice as long as planned because “we
believed that we needed to really give sufficient time to really appreciate the quality of the cards the
children had created” explained Sharon Blaikie. In the end the judges decided that the only fair
solution was to double the number of prizes to ten “and even then there were some wonderful
designs that did not make the list ” she added.

Mayor Tony Hunt commented on the way in which the town’s young people continually produce
such great creative work: “Is it something to do with growing up in this town with its galleries and
beautiful surroundings? Or do Arundel primary schools place more emphasis on fostering the
children’s creativity? Whatever it is, every competition that we run – whether it is for flags for the
Arundel Festival or for Christmas Cards – produces outstanding work from children of all ages. There
are real artists growing up in Arundel.”

Prizes kindly donated by the Wetlands & Wildfowl Centre and The Pea Pod, together with a book token, were presented by Mayor Tony Hunt to the pupils of Arundel Church of England Primary
School and St. Philip’s Roman Catholic Primary School on the last day of term. Congratulations to
